Institutional Meetings in Madrid: The Manuel Ballbé Chair Promotes Dialogue on Emerging Technologies and Human Security

ree

Last week, Dr. Roser Martínez Quirante, Director of the Manuel Ballbé Chair, and Dr. Joaquín Rodríguez Álvarez, Secretary of the Chair, traveled to Madrid to hold a series of strategic meetings with representatives of the Spanish Congress of Deputies, as well as with public companies and state administrations, including Navantia.

The main objective of these meetings was to present the Chair’s lines of work, which focus on the critical analysis of emerging technologies from the perspective of human security and global law. Special emphasis was placed on the Stop Killer Robots campaign, which the Chair promotes in Spain as part of an international network committed to banning lethal autonomous weapon systems.

During the meetings, the Chair’s representatives conveyed the ethical, legal, and social concerns raised by the development and potential deployment of such technologies, and stressed the need to establish robust regulatory frameworks that prioritize human dignity, accountability, and democratic oversight.

Through these actions, the Chair reaffirms its commitment to political and social advocacy, fostering informed dialogue between academia, public institutions, and the industrial sector in defense of technology that serves peace and human rights.
